Essay 1
Title (Centered)

Essay Topic/Purpose: Choose one of the poems and answer the following:

What elements of the poem are reasons it has gone viral after the Orlando shooting this June? Make an argument for why the poem is effective, and do so by breaking down the meaning you find in its imagery, its themes, and/or other literary elements. Connect your analysis of the poem’s language to the actual Orlando event.

Critical Thinking on Topic:
·       Why have these poems gone viral after the Orlando shooting? What does that popularity imply to you about our society?
·       What are the strongest images from the poem that stick out to you and even give you a visceral (physical, emotional) reaction?
·       Are there any repeated lines, words, etc., and what does this repetition do?
·       Word Bank: What words should you use to find a secondary source?
