Requirements:
· 750 – 1000 effective words,
which approximates to 3 to 4 pages.
· MLA Format: double-spaced
paragraphs; 12-point Times
New Roman or Cambria font
· Include MLA in-text citation
and a Work Cited page (not included in minimum page count)
· Use one additional evaluated
secondary (outside) source along with Coates’ article.

Essay Topic/Purpose:
Critique Ta-Nehisi Coates’s
main arguments in “Letter to My Son” by writing a rhetorical analysis (see
definition in Practical Argument)
Critical Thinking/Pre-writing
on Topic:
1.
Identify examples of ethos pathos and logos in piece. Evaluate the argument
inherent in each example.
2.
Who is the author writing to? This may seem obvious, but express a few answers,
with why you think each.
3.
Context: Why is he making this argument? What is happening in the world, right
now?
4.
Pull out a sentence or two and argue that as the thesis of the piece.
5.
What style does his writing have? Look at pages 100-101.
6.
What is logically powerful about the author's views?
7.
What is logically missing or "ignored"?
8.
Who may not like what the author has to say? Why?
