Intense workload for 5-weeks

An Essay a Week

Week 1
Essay 1 write a 3-4 page essay on the topic of Art Imitates Life by doing a literary analysis of one of two poems that went viral after the Orlando shooting: Maggie Smith's "Good Bones" or Christopher Soto's "All Dead Boys Look Like Me."

Week 2
Essay 2 is 3-4 page Rhetorical Analysis of Ta-Nihisi Coates' "Letter to My Son" (the piece from The Atlantic, not the whole book).

Week 3
Students write an Annotated Bibliography (2 pages) for this research assignment.

Week 4
5-7 page Research Essay: Argue the Social Impact of a Word as used by a primary source author. Students will evaluate an article in which they find the use of a word to be problematic; then, they have to argue why it gives off the wrong social perception, etc.

Week 5
8-10 page Final Research Essay: Argue the State of the State. Students have to research and discuss how any one of the fifty states has marginalized (or not) a particular group. For instance, how has Indiana historically and legally marginalized LGBT communities, or how has Florida done so to Cubans or Muslims (or young people, just kidding).
