HW for 7/19:

1. Revised Essay1 is due on Tuesday, at the start of class, printed. Make sure to include a Work Cited

2.  However, a pre-revision exercise is due by Sunday night, uploaded to Blackboard Unit 1, Finding and Using A Secondary Source. Make sure to read all the directions and follow each step:
  • Review the Finding Supporting Secondary Sources links covered during class. Use the Word Bank to find a source relevant to your essay subject.
  • Actively read the source article that you find and pull out quotes and vocabulary as we did with the poems this week
  • Then, integrate ideas that you outline from the article into your revision of Essay 1. To demonstrate that you're going through the process as we've discussed, do the following:
    • Here is what needs to be uploaded in a Word file:
      1. One paragraph that includes the secondary source being cited
      2. underneath the paragraph:
        • paste the link to the article
        • then, past under that two sentences from the article that you are using in your essay. With each passage, give your own one sentence explanation of why you chose to use this quote; focus on explaining the knowledge the quote provides.

  • Essay 2 will be to write a rhetorical analysis of Coate's argument. Make sure to annotate passages in which:
    • Show his use of ethos, pathos, logos, kairos
    • Sentences which clarify his position about "the black body" and American history.
    • Pose some questions about his terminology.
